The goodies from a 'test run' of a new superstore bakery's ovens are being given to some of Bradford's neediest people.

Croissants, loaves, cream cakes and muffins from the new Asda store in Rooley Lane were donated to the Curry Project for distribution among homeless people and addicts helped by the charity.

The big bake came about during a test of the ovens and other machinery at the new store, which opens on Monday.

"We are always keen to support the community that our stores operate within - this is a very worthwhile cause," said Derek Char-ters, store manager.

The donation was welcomed by leaders of the Curry Project which provides a hot meal, cooked by volunteers, to vulnerable people five days a week at the Princeville Methodist Church in Lidget Green.

"We are delighted with the bread donation," said David Somerville, from the project. "Many people in Bradford will benefit from this gift."

The new store, representing an investment of £25 million, opens at 9am on Monday and includes a wide range of ethnic and Asian goods including Halal meat.
