Pedestrians and motorists had a lucky escape when a lorry careered out of control in Brighouse after the driver suffered a suspected heart attack.
The incident happened at around 9.20am on Monday as Neville Ridgley, 64, from Bury, was driving along Huddersfield Road towards Bailiff Bridge.
As Mr Ridgley suffered the suspected attack at the roundabout junction of Wakefield Road and Huddersfield Road, the lorry crossed the central reservation and came to rest on a grass verge near the Stott's Arms pub.
Ian Thornton, owner of nearby Phoenix Pressings, arrived on the scene immediately after the accident.
"I phoned the ambulance and the police. When I got there I thought the driver had got out of the cab because I couldn't see him. He was slumped down on the floor unconscious," he said.
"The lady at the ambulance service relayed resuscitation instructions to me and I told one of the lads from the cafe nearby what to do. The driver was taken away to hospital but died."
He said had the accident been half an hour earlier it could have been a lot worse.
"He was lucky he didn't catch any other cars or vehicles," said Mr Thornton. "It is a very busy road and there is a crash there every week."
An ambulance attended the scene but Mr Ridgley was dead on arrival at hospital.
An officer from Halifax Coroner's Office confirmed that Mr Ridgley died from natural causes.
