Calls for traffic calming to curb speeding on busy Saltaire roads look set to be turned down.

More than 350 people signed a petition requesting the measures in Victoria Road and Caroline Street.

But an officer's report to tomorrow's Shipley community area panel meeting recommends that no further action should be taken at present.

Led by Shipley Green Party, the petition suggested reinstating cobbles to parts of the street in the tourist trap, including the section of Caroline Street between its junctions with Victoria Road and Albert Road.

But according to the report, checks conducted in Victoria Road near Caroline Street revealed that vehicle speeds averaged just 22mph. And checks in Caroline Street found average speeds of 28mph near Exhibition Road and 24mph near Ada Street.

Councillor David Herdson (Con, Shipley West), chairman of the area panel, said there were a number of reasons for recommending no further action be taken - including the village's bid for World Heritage Status.

"We have to consider the conservation of the village and to drop big road blocks won't do us any favours," he said.

"Also there are very few signatures on the petition from residents of Saltaire, which takes some of the credibility of the petition away."

He also said the results of the speed checks indicated that traffic calming measures would have very little impact on road habits and any scheme should include the whole of the village.

Helen Kemp, press officer for Shipley Green Party, owns a craft, gift and bookshop in Victoria Road.

She said: "I have been in this shop for seven years and have seen the cars rushing up and down the road. It's as if people in the village don't exist. I know other people who work on the street have seen cars travelling too fast as well.

"I feel very angry about this. It's as if the problem is being swept under the carpet."

Councillor John Carroll (Con, Shipley West), said: "I have to keep an open mind until the meeting but I do know that traffic officers found no sign of traffic exceeding limits."

Meanwhile, at the same meeting requests for road humps and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit in The Oval, Bingley, will be recommended for consideration.

A petition of 103 signatures requesting road humps and a 20mph speed limit was sent to Bradford Council.

Residents said they were fed up with motorists using the road as a through road at excessive speeds.

They also expressed concern that it was not safe for children to play.

The area panel meeting, which is open to the public, will take place tomorrow in the Council Chamber, Shipley Town Hall, at 5pm.
