Ilkley's annual flower show is under threat after entries for this year's event dwindled to an all-time low.

Sandra Harder, joint secretary of the flower show committee, says that unless more people get involved, the town could face losing the show altogether.

She said: "We are very worried about the lack of entries for the show - if this continues in future years, it will not be able to take place.

"The show has been running for a long time so it would be very sad to see it come to an end."

To nip the problem in the bud, she is urging green-fingered residents to enter this year's show - which takes place at the King's Hall and Winter Gardens on Saturday, August 19.

"It is not too late to submit an entry and I really hope that lots more people will," she said.

"People might feel their entries are not good enough but we really want to stress that the show is not for professional gardeners - it is for the people of this town, whatever their gardening ability. It is a fun event and there really is a class for everyone, from single roses to vegetable growing. There's also lots of competitions for children to take part in on the day."

Prizes at the show, which kicks off at 1.30pm, will be presented by ex-Grumbleweed Maurice Lee, now an artist living in the Dales.

Information on entering the show is available from Ilkley Library, Ilkley Tourist Information Centre or from Ms Harder on (01943) 877516. Closing date for entries is 12noon on Wednesday, August 16.
