THERE was double heartache for Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club members in the doubles competitions as home based players fell to defeat in both the men's and women's competi-tions.

Head Professional Simon Ickringhall and 19-year-old John Chesworth will have been more than happy with their achievement in reaching the final of the Men's Doubles, despite meeting their match on finals day. Halifax's Ben Gudzelak and South African doubles specialist Vaughan Synman secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Ilkley pair.

In the women's doubles, Ilkley's Lindsay Rawling could not finish her fairytale week with a victory in the final. Rawling and Newcastle University colleague Lynsey Davison lost 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-4 to Lind-say Cox and Claire Powell.

Their defeat came despite a monu-mental fightback in the first set tie-break as they came back from 6-1 down to win 9-7. Nonetheless, Rawling, who has recently starred for Yorkshire, can feel proud of her week's work having been the only Ilkley member to qualify for the first round proper of the Girobank Tour women's singles.

In the Men's Evening Singles, Ilkley coach Nick Crowther made the final of the competition, only to be beaten in three sets. He lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to T May.

Mihalis Koovatsos, who had been seeded three, reached the quarter-finals of the Under-12s Boys Singles and also partnered D Walsh to a semi-final place in the Under-14s Boys Doubles. Ilkley's Ben Murray-Potts made it through to the quarter-finals of the Under-14s Boys Singles.

Georgina Jackson, Ilkley Ladies Champion, partnered Dutchman Boscamp to victory in the Mixed Doubles final. In the Ladies Doubles, Angela Harker and Linda Burton secured a win in an all Ilkley final. Madilyn Penny won the Women's Singles Handicap title.

Despite a week of very mixed weather meaning that, in the Girobank events, the players who reached the finals did not play a game on grass until the last Saturday, organisers were pleased with how the tournment went.

Billy Kerr, from the Ilkley club, said that although the weather had affected the crowds on some days, the finals day had been an enormous success.

The adverse weather also proved that the club's investment in the new indoor and artifical courts had been extremely worthwhile.

"It was great to see a full stand and people watching from the new balcony," he said.
