Bradford Park Avenue had a much more comfortable victory in last night's friendly at Brodsworth MW than the 1-0 scoreline suggests.

Despite being without Chris Dolby, Jason Maxwell and Paul Marquis the visitors controlled the game and should have scored several times.

The home side, from the lower tier of the Northern Counties East League, battled well and made Avenue work hard until they tired in the last 15 minutes.

Avenue forced the first chance of the game after just eight minutes. Martin James broke through from midfield and his rasping shot from the edge of the area was tipped over by the home goalkeeper.

Trevor Storton's side broke the deadlock five minutes after the break when Dean Calcutt raced into the area to score.

Avenue goalkeeper Gavin Kelly had just one save to make all night, diving to smother a 20-yard free kick in the 75th minute.

As Brodsworth faded late in the game, Calcutt - the best of the visitors - headed just over and Stephen Ball saw a shot fly a foot wide.

Avenue's trip to Goole's Victoria Pleasure Ground tomorrow has been called off because of a double booking. Their next match is on Monday when Halifax Town visit Horsfall Stadium where the new clubhouse will be open for the first time.

Eccleshill United travel to Wales tomorrow to face Merthyr Tydfil while Farsley Celtic visit Leeds-based Yorkshire League side Carlton.

Celtic also have a fixture on Sunday.

They will play a Bay Horse XI at Throstle Nest in a testimonial for Kevin Speight, the Leeds United fan killed in Turkey before the Galatasaray UEFA cup match last season.

Many Celtic players and manager Martin Haresign were regulars in the pub where he was landlord.

His son George also has links with the club, playing for one of Celtic's junior sides.
