Families have won their battle for a pelican crossing at an accident blackspot used by more than 19,000 vehicles a day.

Parents taking children to school say they struggle to cross Barkerend Road, Bradford, where a six-year-old boy was knocked down in a hit-and-run accident and then run over by another vehicle last month.

Usman Hamid, of Amberley Street, Bradford, was seriously hurt in the accident. There was also a fatal accident on the road earlier this year.

Now residents have been told Bradford Council is expected to take action, after they held a public meeting and submitted a 120-name petition to the authority.

Bradford North Area Panel has decided to provide funding for the crossing near the junction with Harewood Street.

In the past five years there have been 20 recorded accidents on the road in which 26 people have been injured. But the residents say there have been dozens of other near misses and accidents which were not reported.

Councillor John Ryan (Lab, Bowling) who helped the residents with their campaign, said: "It is excellent news for local residents and people who use the junctions, including parents taking their children to school.

"There have been a number of serious accidents over the years and the situation has deteriorated with drivers taking short cuts from Leeds Road to Barkerend Road.

"Residents and councillors have been fighting for this for years and we are pleased the council has finally conceded it is needed."
