BEN Hemingway and 74 other trials riders, and all the Falcon Motor Cycle Club officials, came in for a soaking at bleak Cartworth Moor on Sunday while contesting the West Yorkshire Group championship trial.

"It started dry but at midday the heavens opened and it rained until the last rider completed the course", commented weather battered organiser Brian Clarkson.

For Hemingway it was debut day on his brand new 2001 Beta Rev Three, the machine he will contest all the world trials qualifying round next year.

Ben, younger of the two East Keswick brothers and both members of Yeadon and Guiseley Motor Club, takes on the world with brother Dan as his minder and mechanic and goes head to head with world champion cousin Dougie Lampkin, the difference being that Ben rides GP Beta as part of John Lampkin's strong squad while Dougie runs Ranson Montesa, a rival camp.

The weather axed two major motor sport events in the county over the weekend and the trial that ran at Reeth, in what was termed The Woodyard, was a soggy affair for well over 100 riders.

Pickering Motor Club did at least run their motocross at Husthwaite where failing light caused the last block of races to be cancelled and where Huddersfield Yamaha expert Mark Silvester grabbed a share of the prizes on the muddy hillside track.

Mark chose the meeting to debut his 2001 250cc Yamaha and the new bike certainly pulled in a lot of interest.

Ilkley Motor Club had no option to cancel their old established Uniroyal Trophy autotest and production car trial on Sunday after fears that farmland would be too badly churned up by spinning wheels.

"We have no immediate plans to re-date the event this year", said organiser John Spencer on Sunday night.

Lakeland teenager Glen Quinn won the Darlington trial riding the 40 section hard course route that took in some of the Scott Trial course used last week.

Fourteen-year-old James Dabill produced a cracking result that took him to fifth overall and second in Youth Class A, while Roundhay youngster Dane Sherwin snatched fifth in class and 13th over the hard course route.

Champion road racer Mick Jackson won the twin-shock class from Batley's Richard Thorpe, who rode his pristine Sprite machine but Eric Boocock's equally shiny BSA was always threatening.

Former speedway ace Boocock was a legend on the tracks and his speedway machine were always immaculate at Halifax Shay.

THE newly formed Airedale and Wharfedale Motor Cycle Club got off to a great start last Wednesday evening at the Ings Hotel at Guiseley when David and Tony Jefferies made a special guest appearance with more than 100 bikers.

Both members of the TT winning family took part in a question and answer evening.

The club have already got a bi-monthly full colour newsletter in print. The third edition contains a full list of club fixtures, colour picture of items, and bikes for sale.

With names like the Jefferies organisation, former Esholt record-holder Chris Richards taking an interest and Dave Bancroft, son of the Horsforth bike legend Bill Bancroft, appearing in the club newsletter this is one club on the rise.

Debby Wood is the lady to contact for further details and all club nights will be listed in the motor sport diary dates column each Thursday.

The weekend list covers all sports, the main event though is the British sidecar trials championship at Hope where Robin Luscombe has an outside chance of taking the sidecar crown, but only if Robin Morewood retires.

A bit like Schumacher and Hakinnen in a way but at a slower pace.

There are plans for a motocross at Oliver's Mount and a road race at Elvington, both staged by Auto 66, and Peter Hillaby has confirmed that both will take place.
