A disaster appeal for the district's flood victims is set to be started by Bradford Council.

The announcement came as Elliot Morley, the Govern-ment's Minister for Flooding and Coastal Defence, surveyed the scenes of devastation in the Stockbridge area of Keighley.

About 200 people had to flee their homes in that area on Monday night as the River Aire burst its banks.

Full details of the appeal will be announced next week, but Bradford Council leader Councillor Margaret Eaton, who met Mr Morley and residents in the Keighley area yesterday, said: "Anyone whose home has been devastated by the floods must be wondering how on earth they are going to cope.

"People will be distraught at seeing their homes and personal belongings destroyed by something beyond their control.

"I am sure that everyone across the district feels for these people and that is why I will be urging the council next week to set up a special appeal. Bradford has a long tradition of helping people in need and I am sure everyone will give generously."
