THE tragic deaths of dozens of Horsforth people, when a mine collapsed and crushed them in the 19th century, could be commemorated with a memorial plaque.
Horsforth Town Council's Environment Committee is hoping to revamp the picturesque Hunger Hills area of the town, which overlooks the spot where the tragedy occurred.
Chairman Councillor David Read said: "We think it would be apt that the tragedy should be remembered.
"Miners and children lost their lives
there and it's become part of the town's
heritage.
"The ground is already consecrated and a memorial on a stone plinth would, we hope, be a fine tribute."
Other improvements at Hunger Hills will include increasing access to the site, more footpaths, picnic tables and a panorama indicator, similar to one on Otley Chevin.
The Hunger Hills project is the first part of a joint town council and city council five-year plan to improve beauty spots around the town.
Meanwhile, the committee also pledged to give financial support to a resident at the Broadfields Old People's Home to support the voluntary gardening work he does to improve the area.
