RESIDENTS fighting to stop a mobile telephone mast going up in Horsforth are this week celebrating after the applicant withdrew the application. Residents of Broadway and Stanhope Drive had opposed plans by One 2 One to put a 465 foot mast directly opposite their homes. It had also been opposed by town and city councillors,

Horsforth Civic Society and MP Paul Truswell. Chairman of Horsforth Town Council planning committee, John Brodwell, welcomed the news and said he was pleased One 2 One had taken into account the large amount of local opposition to it. "I am delighted that it has been withdrawn," said Councillor Brodwell, who is also chairman of the civic society. "This was a particularly sensitive site and it is gratifying that the applicant has taken into account the views of local residents. It was particularly dear to civic society members, who had planted bulbs in the area in memory of a former committee member."

Join the crime fight

SHOPS and businesses in Aireborough are being urged to join an anti-crime scheme. The newly launched Aireborough Crimewatch now has a committee and is looking for shops and businesses to sign up. For just a single one off payment of £10, members will have instant access to the anti-crime network. Gwen Harrison, Crimewatch treasurer, said the police-run scheme was the best way for people to receive early warning about crimes going on in Guiseley, Rawdon and Yeadon. Those signing up to the scheme are given stickers to put up in their windows and are put on a voicemail system giving early warnings. "We really want a deterrent to stop thieves from coming into our area. I've been around talking to people and everyone is really enthusiastic about it," she said. Anyone interested in finding out more about the scheme should go to the meeting on Monday from 6pm at the Hawkhill Club, Park Road, Guiseley.

Parking issue poser

PARKING problems at Cabin Road in Pool-in-Wharfedale are being looked at by the parish council following complaints by residents. A quick survey asking people how many cars they own and what their parking situation is will be distributed to residents by the parish council, which owns the land where much of the traffic and parking problems are. The parish council has pledged to look at the survey results and possibly review its

policy on the land. Meanwhile, the parish council and community group Pool 2020 is carrying out a survey of the village's trees for the regional Great Trees of Yorkshire Campaign.
