FA Umbro Trophy - First round.

Guiseley 4, Eastwood Town 1.

"THAT'S it then", pessimistically declared a Guiseley supporter when Eastwood Town scored with their first attack in the eighth minute.

And after five successive defeats without a goal scored for Guiseley, there were many in the crowd who shared the sentiment.

But Eastwood's Gavin Warboys' half-volley was not the end for Guiseley, who must wish they could play the Nottinghamshire side every week.

Guiseley's last win, and goal scored, was against Eastwood on October 3, but the opening clashes in this cup encounter did little to indicate another Guiseley victory.

Eastwood were by far the more composed side early-on, passing the ball and controlling the midfield with composure, as Guiseley huffed and puffed to little effect.

Dez Hazel was first to test the visiting keeper with a drive from the edge of the box which he did well to save, but Guiseley were lucky soon after not to find themselves 2-0 down.

An uncharacteristic slip by Simon Trevitt left Eastwood's Mick Kennerdale one-on-one with the keeper only for the attacker's control to let him down, allowing Nigel Muttick to seize the ball.

Eastwood were to rue the miss.

On 32 minutes when Guiseley's David Cooke picked the ball up in midfield and began another of his mazy runs, apparently without purpose, Andy Williams made a rare foray upfield.

Cooke maintained possession and slipped the ball through to him on the byline.

Williams skipped one challenge, slid the ball into the six yard box where Cooke was waiting to sidefoot home and level the scores.

Guiseley's first goal for five games was welcomed with understandable relief, but the remainder of the half passed in similar fashion to what had gone before, with Eastwood threatening in three attacks and Guiseley twice.

In the second-half it was clear the break had benefited the home side more than the visitors as Eastwood's passing mysteriously went awry and their control of the midfield was vanquished, Paul Burke and Phil Atkinson both coming close to adding a second for the home side.

After the manner of the first goal, Eastwood must have dreaded the sight of Williams making his rare forays into their box - with good reason.

This time it was Atkinson who retained possession, played the by-line ball to Williams who returned it in the six yard box for Atkinson to score an almost carbon copy of the first goal.

Guiseley survived a scare when defender Simon Trevitt cleared off the line but by now the home side had found Eastwood's Achilles Heel and just five minutes later it was Paul Burke who was put through to the by-line and his cross was met by the diving head of Cooke to make it 3-1.

Eastwood reshuffled their pack to no avail, and Julian Wilkes replaced Paul Burke for Guiseley. Within minutes it was Wilkes who added the fourth.

A hopeful cross by Atkinson ballooned off a defender and Wilkes, standing near the goalkeeper, rose umarked to nod home.

Suddenly after such a barren spell scoring was very easy and it was only left for Muttick to keep the score at 4-1 with a fine point blank save from a header.

Roll on the December 2 when the cup run goes to Unibond Premier League strugglers Runcorn, and roll on January 6 when Eastwood visit again in the league.
