Stars of the cycling world will gather on Saturday in memory of a Bradford sporting hero who died after an incident outside a city nightclub.

Olympic gold medallist Jason Quealley and bronze medal winner Jon Clay, of Horsforth, will be among the big-name stars attending the sixth Dave Rayner annual memorial dinner.

The event, which is being held at Bradford's Hilton Hotel, raises funds to send promising young cyclists abroad to improve their riding skills in memory of cyclist Dave who was fatally injured outside Maestro's nightclub after a night out in November 1994.

Also attending the dinner will be champion Belgian cyclist Axel Merckx, son of cycling legend Eddie Merckx, and Britain's Tour de France hero David Millar.

David Millar has donated his stage winner's yellow jersey - which he won in the time trial stage at this year's Tour - to be auctioned for the fund.

Event organiser Colin Willcock said: "The fact that David Millar has donated his yellow jersey to the fund shows the respect that David was held in. He was a nice lad - I remember him always laughing.

"David Millar was the first person the fund helped and his mum once said if it wasn't for the Rayner fund he would never have got where he has because he couldn't afford to go abroad to train.

"We hope the money we raise at this event will help some stars of the future."

Mr Willcock said it was vital for young cyclists to go abroad to achieve success.

"Cycling is more professional on the Continent, the races are longer, have a bigger field, and are more tactical.

"Young riders have to go there to get the experience.''

Mr Millar decided to donate his prized jersey after the Rayner fund helped him financially during his early cycling career.

David Rayner died after an incident outside Maestro nightclub, in Manningham Lane, Bradford.

The 27-year-old was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary and put on a life support machine but died a day later.

The incident happened only ten days after the professional cyclist, who had raced for top cycling teams in Italy and America, returned from honeymoon with his wife Serena.
