A Keighley community centre will be "given back" to the people next week.

Residents of the area around the recently-renamed Hainworth Wood Centre will form their own management committee.

They will be encouraged to organise new activities in the building at the junction of Hainworth Wood and Woodhouse Road.

The building was formerly the Woodhouse and Spring Bank Community Centre but had fallen into disrepair.

Bradford council wanted to revitalise community spirit in the area and involve people from as far away as Park Lane, Wesley Place, Ingrow and Hainworth.

Money was found to redecorate and refurnish the centre and appoint a temporary community development worker.

The aim now is to form a committee with an official constitution, in order to seek funding from the council and local crime-fighting funds.

The worker, Lynne Smith, has spent the past few months talking to residents and working with volunteers to spruce up the building.

She opened the doors to residents last week during a special meeting of Hainworth Wood neighbourhood forum.

After the meeting she hosted activities such as bingo, karaoke, children's crafts and a chilli supper.

Lynne was pleased that around 25 adults, plus several children, turned up despite the poor weather.

She had invited line dancers from her home estate, Bracken Bank, to show the sort of activities that can go on in a flourishing community centre.

"I've got a number of residents interested in the committee," says Lynne. "We've got quite a mixed bag - older teenagers, adults and one or two pensioners.

"We need people involved. I'm only there to run the building and help the groups, such as assisting with writing funding applications."

A meeting will be held at the centre on Wednesday at 1.30pm to set up the management committee and discuss future plans.

Lynne says: "It's going to be informal, but it's to get the ball rolling. Anyone who's keen to get involved should go along."
