A Stanbury teenager is taking part in a 10-week expedition to Chile.

Anna Jagan, 16, will tackle a wide range of community and environmental projects.

Tasks will include helping to build an old people's home and community centre, conservation work and assisting scientists with marine research and the tracking of rare wild animals.

To gain a place on next autumn's Raleigh International expedition, Anna -- an A-level student at Skipton Girls' High School -- had to undergo a gruelling selection weekend in which she was tested on numerous attributes from initiative to personal endurance. Now she has to raise £3,200 to fund the work of Raleigh International.

She has launched her fundraising efforts by selling hand-made Christmas cards. And Anna is appealing to local businesses and individuals for support.

She says: "I was looking for something to do in my gap year and the expedition appealed to me. The selection weekend was very demanding. About 60 of us took part and we had to tackle all sorts of outdoor activities, without sleeping or eating! I was delighted to be chosen and I am looking forward to the expedition."

Anna, pictured right, who has represented Great Britain at junior level in orienteering, is among about 40 people from this country selected to take part in the Chile adventure.
