One of Keighley's biggest factories will be on fire this month -- but there'll be nothing to worry about. In fact, the bogus blaze will help firefighters make workplaces around the town safer in future.

The massive Magnet complex, in Hard Ings Road, is being used by Keighley fire crews for a major exercise on November 26.

Special environmentally-friendly smoke will billow from the site from about 11am, heralding the arrival of Keighley's Red Watch for a 90-minute simulation.

Magnet, which sponsors West Yorkshire Fire Service, says the exercise will help firefighters deal with any real incidents at industrial sites in Keighley.

A spokesman says: "The fire service will be well-versed in the practices and procedures which will need to be implemented in order to safeguard local people.

"As major employers in the area we are well aware of our responsibilities to provide a safe working environment for our staff. To this end we will be helping the brigade to conduct this major training exercise, during which our own emergency evacuation policy can be tested."

Sirens will not be used during the simulation, and disruption to local roads will be minimal.

A fire service spokesman says such exercises are held regularly across the county as an essential part of training.

He adds: "It not only addresses particular areas of a firefighter's skill, but specific risks in their own locality. This kind of exercise is needed to make sure firefighters are giving the best possible service to the community."
