Amanda Thompson, Keighley's world-famous young pianist, is to receive her "gown" following success on her university course.

She is going ahead with the ceremony on Wednesday despite the death of her father Bill a fortnight ago.

Mr Thompson insisted Amanda (pictured) attend the presentation to mark her first two years of study on a chemistry course at Huddersfield University.

Mother Sylvia says: "We were so pleased with Amanda. Her father was terribly proud of her - she got 10 As in her exams and coursework."

Amanda, 20, was a talented dancer who turned to music while at primary school and later studied at leading Manchester music school Chethams.

She successfully fought leukaemia as a young teenager and went on to achieve national fame through Esther Rantzen's TV programme Hearts of Gold.

Amanda raised thousands of pounds for cancer charities as well as performing in concert halls around the UK and Europe and recording with opera singer Lesley Garrett.

Two years ago Amanda began studying chemistry at Huddersfield University, sponsored by her employers, Bradford chemicals firm Allied Colloids.

She recently completed her HNC2, passing with 10 A grades and 5 Bs, and will spend the next three years completing her degree.
