THIS smiling group of Keighley Brownies and their leaders was supplied by Mrs Irene Kelly, of Oakbank Broadway, who appears as young Irene Marsden.

The occasion was probably the Brownie Revels of either 1943 or 1944, held at Red Holt, Ingrow, thanks to Mrs Henry Clough, wife of the chairman of directors of Robert Clough (Keighley) Ltd, of Grove Mills.

These July events took place in 'the clearing in the wood right at the top of the main drive' at Red Holt, and featured competitions on such Guiding skills as use of the semaphore.

In 1943 the Devonshire Street Brownies won with 84 points out of a possible 96.

Brownies were instructed to 'bring their own food and cups' as a reminder of wartime rationing.

Interestingly, these children would have spent half their lives at a time of food shortages, yet they look healthy enough.

The grounds of Red Holt were also used for Girl Guide activities, as most notably were those of Steeton Hall.
