Avenue's tenth victory of the season saw them race through the UniBond Division One 30 point barrier and kept them hot on the heels of leaders Vauxhall GM.

Kendal Town's mini revival, that has brought them ten points from their last four games, came to a juddering halt when they ran into an Avenue side hell bent on avenging a shock defeat in their last league game.

That was a fortnight ago when Avenue slumped 2-0 to struggling Matlock Town - only their second reversal at Horsfall Stadium in two seasons.

Trevor Storton has been looking for his side to put that defeat out of their system at the first opportunity and they certainly did that in some style.

"Everything about the performance was good. We needed that to pick us up and get a bit of confidence back" said the manager. "There are so many positives we can take out of this and we have finally put the Matlock game to rest.

"It was pleasing to win by a big score and it could have been even higher. We have been threatening to do that for some time, I know two of the goals were own goals but that only reflects the pressure we were putting them under.

"It was nice to see Andy Hayward get on the scoresheet at home. Dean Calcutt was outstanding, and Martin James and Mark Hancock were also great.

"But it would be unfair to single individuals out because it was a fine team performance. I still think there is a lot to come out of us though, we have the quality to do even better."

Kendal played the last half an hour with only ten men after Craig Allardyce, son of Bolton manager Sam, tangled with Jason Maxwell and threw a punch, but Avenue were cruising at 2-0 by then and were never in danger of being caught.

The only goal of the first half came in the 37th minute and was in part due to Hayward's persistence.

The striker got into the visitors area but his shot was blocked by Dave Burrow. He won the ball back and laid a square pass to Hancock who curled a shot round keeper Mark Boswell which went in off the post.

A minute into the second half Hancock released Chris Dolby and he drove in a low centre from the left which Burrow could only turn in his own net.

Avenue created chances with almost every attack but did not get their next breakthrough until the 78th minute. Another through ball from Hancock saw Hayward sprinting through and he beat Boswell with a firm shot from the edge of the area.

It was the top scorer's sixth since his transfer from Frickley Athletic, and a minute from time Mike Garrity headed past his own keeper when Maxwell threatened to get on the end of Calcutt's cross.
