Shipley's monument to 1960s architecture - the landmark clock tower on Kirkgate - is being used as part of a bid to bring more tourists into the town.

The clock features in the town centre's first tourist guide, thousands of which are to be distributed to visitors at hotels and tourist information centres across York-shire.

And by including Shipley in a leaflet alongside Saltaire it is hoped some of the thousands of tourists who already visit the historic model mill village will also be tempted into the town centre.

More than 10,000 copies of the Shipley Town Centre and Saltaire Guide have been produced by the Shipley Town Centre Development Partnership.

Advertising from local businesses has financed the leaflets and the partnership is planning to update the guide - drawn up by Shipley Town Centre Manager Bob Parker - each year.

As well as a map pin-pointing places of interest, car parks, major retailers and other places such as stations and leisure facilities, the leaflet includes a brief guide to Shipley - complete with references to the clock tower - and Saltaire.

Councillor John Carroll (Con, Shipley West), chairman of the town centre development partnership, said: "It's the first time we've ever promoted Shipley in this way. I think it's an excellent publication which showcases what Shipley and Saltaire have to offer.

"Saltaire attracts a lot of publicity already and if it gets World Heritage Status it will bring in even more tourists.

"The two places co-exist and complement each other very well - there's the history and culture in Saltaire on the one hand and the bustling market town of Shipley on the other - but people often visit Saltaire and don't even realise Shipley's there.

"Although architecturally something like Shipley's clock tower may not be the best clock tower in the country, it's ours and is a great example of 1960s architecture.''

Councillor Tony Miller (Lab, Shipley East) said: "Hopefully, the guides will help bring more people into Shipley and make them better informed about the town and what it has to offer.''

And Clive Woods, chairman of Saltaire Village Society, said: "The guide promotes Saltaire as well so we're only too pleased with it and wish the partnership well. The Shipley clock tower is pure sixties but it's part of the architectural history of the area and we're quite happy with it.''
