Queensbury loose forward Lee Charlton was in sparkling form scoring two tries in the 24-0 home win against Charleston Knights in the first round of the Silk Cut Challenge Cup.

With both sides undefeated in their respective leagues, something had to give and it was a rampant Queensbury who earned a trip to Walney Central this weekend.

Charlton opened the scoring when he pounced on his own kick through and stand-off Johnny Feather duly added the extras to give Bury a 6-0 half time lead.

Queensbury lost second row forward Gary Prentice with a broken nose but this in no way altered their momentum with Charlton beating four defenders for his second.

Centre Trevor Stead also touched down and packman Matthew Galtress closed the scoring with his late effort. Feather was bang on target with the boot to give Bury an emphatic final tally.

West Bowling coach Glenn Barraclough gave Shaun Fallon the difficult task of marking Wigan St Judes danger man stand off Darren Jones and he responded magnificently to give the current BARLA international a real run around in the 22-0 success at Bankfoot CC in the National Conference Division One.

Bowling made their intentions clear straight from the kick-off when Barraclough - always a danger near to the line - powered over from acting half.

To any neutral observer it must have been difficult to tell who were the promotion contenders as Bowling tore into the title favourites with gusto. It came as no suprise when Fallon latched onto a break from centre Martin Tordoff and headed towards the posts.

He was alert enough to pop a pass to Chris Scott just as he was being tackled and the wingman planted the ball over the line. Scrum half Dean Garside added the extras for a 10-0 half time lead.

The second half was a cracking end to end affair but Bowling never let their steely grip on the game falter.

Fallon was again to the fore by figuring prominently in the build up which led to further tries from second row forward Lee Hutchinson and a 30 metre Tordoff specia - both of which was converted by the reliable boot of Garside.

In beating New Earswick All Blacks 20-14, Keighley Albion continue to progress up Division Two after their fourth consecutive league win.

In difficult conditions, Albion should have won by a far greater margin. Their inability to take chances and indiscipline kept the York side in the game although to be fair Albion never looked like losing.

They went behind early on with an unconverted try but soon hit back when Mark Adams sent Neil Jordan through on a diagonal run to the posts. Adams converted to give Albion the lead.

New Earswick hit back with a penalty to level things but Albion ran in two further tries before the break. Jordan and Wayne Smith combined to put Tony Fretwell in at the corner and then just before half-time a lovely kick from man-of-the-match and skipper Craig Morphett put Adams over for a try which he just failed to convert.

New Earswick got one further penalty in the first half and the score at the break was 14-8.

Playing down the slope in the second half, Albion should have run riot but the conditions were never going to allow that and a tendency to be over-elaborate at times didn't help. It looked like remaining 14-8 until the 71st minute when Martin Fryers charged in under the posts taking three defenders with him to seal victory for Albion. Dean Brooks converted and that was really the points in the bag.

However, the York side did make Albion sweat a bit in the final minutes - they scored a converted try to complete the scoring but really they had left it too late to ever contend for the points.
