Tragic young motorcycle trials star Chris Carter is to be buried in woodland where he regularly competed and practised.

Parents Brian and Margaret Carter are expecting several hundred mourners to pack into Guiseley's St Oswald's Church for Friday morning's funeral service.

Chris, 20, died on Thursday night after the car he was driving careered into a lamppost in Brownberrie Lane, Horsforth, and burst into flames.

The former Guiseley School student had been a member of Yeadon Guiseley District Motor Club since he was seven.

The Yorkshire Centre expert grade rider took part in trials events throughout the country - winning a succession of championships - and often competed and practised at Dob Park near Otley, on land owned by his father and club president Mike Hinch.

Following the funeral service at 11.30am, Chris, who worked as an apprentice for Meggs plumbers in Baildon, will be laid to rest in woodland at Dob Park.

His friends are to act as pallbearers at St Oswald's and at Dob Park.

The burial service is set to take place at about 12.45pm, is open to all and will be followed by a gathering at the Yew Tree pub at Carr Bank, Otley.

Mr Carter, of Tranmere Park, Guiseley, said: "He's going to be buried on a piece of land we own at Dob Park - we want to know where he is and having this land we're in a position to be able to do this.

"It's a beautiful area and Dob Park's a very special place for all of us.

"He rode there, practised there and helped me out with forestry - it was like Chris's own back garden and I'm sure he'd be delighted about this.

"We'll be planting an oak tree to mark the grave and it will be at a private but accessible spot, away from where the competitions are held.

"We're expecting a lot of people to be there on Friday. St Oswald's was the only place we could think of that would be half big enough.''

Mrs Carter said: "The amount of support we've had is really overwhelming and we can't count the number of cards and letters we've had so far.

"It's been amazing and the messages have come from people all over the country, a lot from friends and contacts Chris made through the motor club.''

Family flowers only are being requested for the funeral. Donations will be collected in Chris's memory for the Macmillan Nurses.
