A Birstall pensioner who was lonely and depressed after the death of her husband killed herself, an inquest heard.

Brenda Clafton, 62, of King's Court, was found dead in the first-floor flat of her sheltered accommodation by a warden.

She had a plastic bag stuck to her face and neck with plasters and had left a note to her sons indicating she to be cremated.

Huddersfield Coroner's Court heard a statement from her son, David, that she had twice been taken to hospital in a coma.

He said she seldom ventured out of the flat but did get depressed and had been taking sleeping tablets. He said she had never expressed a wish to take her own life.

Her doctor, John Clarke, told the court Mrs Clafton had taken Temazepam for more than ten years to help her insomnia, but that her dosage had been reduced.

He said she had expressed unhappiness after the death of her husband, but never a wish to take her own life.

The warden, Edwina Davis, said Mrs Clafton was a very private lady. She attended the scene when another careworker found Mrs Clafton dead in bed.

Assistant deputy Coroner, James Turnbull recorded a verdict that Mrs Clafton had taken her own life.
