Bradford Council leader Councillor Margaret Eaton today called for the Government to give more money to the district's five policing divisions to help police stamp out gun law in the district.

Coun Eaton today also gave her backing to the Telegraph & Argus campaign to eradicate gun violence.

She told the T&A: "This campaign has my full support. Why should people put up with it? Why should a small minority of people be allowed to spoil things?

"It is always positive to work as a community and address common concerns.

"But I don't think we should lose sight of the fact that one of the major problems in all communities is a shortage of police officers on the streets."

Sunday's shooting of a man outside the Sweet Centre restaurant in Lumb Lane, Manningham, was the city's seventh firearms incident in six months.

One man has died as a result of the violence and six others have been injured. Shotguns and handguns are among the weapons used.

Bradford's three MPs have already met Jack Straw to discuss the problem and say they are prepared to fight for extra police funding.

Coun Eaton said: "Violent crime is very high on people's lists of concerns. However many times the Council meets to try to get communities pulling together police funding needs to be addressed."

Senior police officers have also backed the T&A's campaign, adding members of the public have a huge role to play by passing on information to officers.

As well as incident rooms dedicated to the recent shootings, people can contact the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
