Keighley police are cracking down on drink-drivers this Christmas.

Officers have pledged extra vigilance over the festive period to slam the brakes on drunken motorists.

And police are urging the public to "shop" anyone they suspect of driving over the legal alcohol limit.

Sgt Allan Gee, of Keighley police, says: "A lot of people will be going out partying and drinking with friends over the next few weeks.

"We don't want to spoil people's enjoyment, but we would remind everyone that drink-driving can have devastating and tragic consequences - for the offender and for innocent members of the public.

"The message is very simple - don't drink and drive. If you intend to drink, leave your car at home and use public transport or taxis.

"Anyone caught driving over the limit faces an automatic ban and a fine or imprisonment.

"The Home Office, as in previous years, has launched a national anti-drink-driving campaign, which we fully support."

Last year saw a marked increase in the number of motorists caught drink-driving over the festive period in the Keighley police division. Thirteen people were charged with the offence, compared to six the previous year.

This year police will be closely monitoring the number of motorists breath tested.
