Aireborough.......39

CLUB coach John Lockwood was well pleased with the Aireborough team's all-round performance as they maintained third place in their league.

Under the leadership of stand-in skipper Jon Rhodes they dominated the forward exchanges with hooker Nigel Craven's scrummaging and line-out throwing ensuring quality possession.

This provided opportunities for Aireborough's backs which they accepted with relish as stand-off John Bottomley regularly carved up the opposition defence with his penetrating runs. Always in close support were centres Peter Booth, who bagged a brace of tries, and James Kinghorn, whose physical presence lead to his score.

Winger Matt Craven continued his improvement in form with a well-taken try and No 8 Tony Exley confirmed his position as club leading try-scorer with a touch-down. Aireborough's Player-of-the-Match was flanker Jon Rhodes with his all-round support and cover which was crowned with a fine try.

Scrum-half Gwyn Jones made three conversions and full-back Paul Mackie a penalty to complete Aireborough's scoring.

A weakened Dragons team put up a respectable performance against senior club opposition. After conceding an early try Dragons hit back when a pick-up at the base of the scrum from No 8 Paul Nightingale lad to full-back Nick Stamp entering the line to burst over in the corner.

In heavy conditions the visitor's strength told and Dragons were grateful for the defence of flankers Granville Sellars and Graham Turner and the line-out possession of Mark Robinson to keep them in the game. Dragon's most effective attacking option was stand-off Phil Ineson's tactical kicking. Conceding a second try spurred Dragons but chances went begging when prop Mark Lester lost the ball as he crossed the line and winger Steve Gaunt stumbled with the line at his mercy.

After the interval Dragon's misfortune continued as winger Matt Grant spilled a pass with a clear run to the line. Two further tries by the visitors put the game out of Dragon's reach. Centre Dave Sockett impressed with his strong running and tackling.
