RYAN Yates, a sixth-form student at Benton Park School in Rawdon, and a member of the Great Britain canoe slalom team, has recently achieved the title of British Junior Champion by beating all of the U18 competitors in the British Open.
Ryan has been part of the World Class Performance Programme since May this year. During the summer he toured Europe and competed in the Junior World Championships of the Junior World Cup series, to give him an overall world ranking of fifth Under-16 and 33rd Under-18. Closer to home, Ryan has achieved a British ranking of 27th in the National Championship Series (including seniors).
As he enters his intense winter training phase, Ryan continues to have support from the World Class Performance Programme and the British team.
Ryan would like to thank his personal coach, John Sturgess (chief coach of the England canoe slalom team) for all his hard work during the past four seasons.
Together, Ryan and John are aiming for the 2008 Olympic games.
