Library users are set to face higher fines for overdue books and pay more to borrow music cassettes and compact discs.

Members of Bradford Council's ruling Executive Committee will be asked to approve the increased charges at their meeting on Tuesday.

Administration charges for sending the first two letters telling borrowers their books are overdue will be scrapped, so children and pensioners will no longer be charged for notification.

An existing third overdue letter will be replaced with a standard £5 administration charge.

Fines will rise for late books, from 32p per book when six days late to 42p from February 5, and from £1.30 when six weeks late to £1.70.

The cost of hiring a cassette will rise 10p to 50p, and compact discs from 60p to 70p.

Room rental charges will also rise, and the cost of getting married at the council-run Cartwright Hall, in Manningham's Lister Park, will increase by £10 to £290.

In a report to the committee, Paul Lawson, the head of arts, museums and libraries, said: "Revenue from book fines has fallen significantly in recent years in line with a fall in the number of books borrowed. The proposals seek to redress the fall in income without having too adverse an effect on the number of books borrowed."

The proposals aim to net an extra £25,000 a year.

At the same meeting councillors will be asked to approve expenditure of £75,000 to improve library buildings across the district.

"The improvements we are hoping to carry out are all vital and are designed to make sure the buildings concerned continue to be fit for public use," said Councillor Anne Hawkesworth, executive member for the environment.
