Councillor Ghazanfer Khaliq will be the next Lord Mayor of Bradford.
He will be the city's second Asian civic leader. In May 1985, the honour went to Coun Mohammed Ajeeb.
Coun Khaliq, of Thornbury, has represented Bradford Moor since 1988. He was vice chairman of the council in 1996-7. He will be joined for civic duties by his wife Shahnaz.
The couple were selected for the prestigious role by a new system of choosing Bradford's civic team.
Bradford Council's Labour group has nominated Coun Khaliq with Councillor Irene Ellison-Wood (Keighley West) as deputy.
The nomination was the first using the new system, agreed by the council's three political groups.
It aims to share appointments fairly between the groups. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the full council.
