WOMEN are being urged to consider their own safety when they are out at night by themselves after a woman was injured in a mugging in a dark Horsforth street.

The victim got off a bus outside the Eleventh Earl Pub and began to walk along poorly lit Back Lane when a blue car drove slowly past her and then turned around.

A man then leaned out of the front passenger seat window and snatched the woman's bag from her. She stumbled and suffered minor injuries.

The car made off with the black leather bag containing a mobile phone, a small amount of cash and various cards and keys.

The driver of the car was described as a well built white male, aged at least 30 years old and balding, while the man at the passenger side who grabbed the bag was white and well-built.

Detective Inspector Steve O'Callaghan of Weetwood Police said: "Women in particular need to be aware of this sort of attack and take precautions to make themselves less vulnerable, like sticking to main roads which are well-lit and being accompanied by someone else if possible.

"Luckily we don't have a major problem with this sort of incident around here, but taking precautions is something women should bear in mind."

The woman was mugged at 8.20pm on New Year's Day.
