A MOTORIST is calling for traffic lights at a busy junction.

Muriel Nowell has suggested that traffic lights be used at peak times at the junction of Kirkgate, Clogg Bridge and Elliott Street in Silsden.

And she has approached the town's parish council for help.

Mrs Nowell says the lights would make the junction a lot safer, particularly for motorists coming out of Elliott Street whose visibility is restricted by a nearby canal bridge.

Her call comes after she was involved in a minor accident at the junction.

"At busy times it's just horrendous," said Mrs Nowell, of Craven Avenue. "There's traffic going in all directions and it can get very confusing for drivers.

"I think peak time traffic lights would be a good idea as it would not only save motorists time but also make the junction a lot safer.

"Another idea is to make Elliott Street one way so traffic can only turn in but not come out."

Mrs Nowell is also concerned about cars parked on both sides of the road near her home.

She says the parking problems have worsened since yellow lines were extended on nearby Howden Road. "It's just an accident waiting to happen," she added.

The matter was discussed by the parish council last Thursday.

Road safety representative Coun Lawrence Walton said he feared if traffic lights were installed it could lead to more houses being built in the Woodside Road area.

The homes idea had been dismissed in the past due to traffic problems at the junction.

Coun Paul Bromley added that the police should be asked to monitor the situation.
