CRAVEN'S Domestic Violence Forum has appointed a new development worker - thanks to a successful lottery grant.

Jo Purdy is due to start work on February 1 but the forum has been unable to find suitable office premises.

Forum chairman Barbara Cox said: "We have been trying our hardest but there seems to be a dearth of suitable properties in Skipton."

The group is looking for a base which can accommodate four workers, has a separate interview room, and is easily accessible.

"It must be in an inconspicuous position, and ideally it would be on the ground floor," said Barbara.

The forum secured a lottery grant of £197,000, with some of the money going towards funding a development officer and an outreach worker.

The rest of the cash will be used to set up a helpline, and secure office premises.

Barbara added: "At the moment, there are no services whatsoever for women or children in Craven suffering from domestic violence.

"We have done a lot of research, which suggests there is a need, particularly in rural areas. Domestic violence is happening right underneath our noses."

Until premises are found, Jo will share the offices of Craven Voluntary Action in Coach Street, Skipton.

The forum would like to hear from anyone who can suggest a suitable property. Those who can help should contact Barbara on 01535 606111, or Jacqui Baines at Craven Voluntary Action on 01756 701056.
