Water bosses and former Olympic showjumper Harvey Smith are in financial deadlock over the value of land to be used for a sewage outfall.

Mr Smith, of High Eldwick, Bingley, has been offered ten times the market value for an area of land he owns in Riddlesden by Yorkshire Water.

The water firm has offered him £3,000 for the land plus another £3,500 for a section of field to lay a sewage pipe.

If the two fail to reach an agreement by January 19, Yorkshire Water plans to use its statutory right to construct the system in the nearby garden of Richard and Carolyn Mozejko, of Bradford Road.

The couple, who have two children, have pledged to fight any attempt to get on to their land.

The system will take foul and surface sewage from a new 400-home Barratt housing development off Swine Lane. A banner outside the Mozejko property proclaims: "Yorkshire Water our kids don't want to play in Barratt sewage."

A Yorkshire Water spokesman said: "We have written a letter to Harvey Smith's agent offering him ten times the amount the land is worth. We are waiting for him to get back with a suitable offer."

Mr Smith said he had not been informed of any deadline date. "They have not been in touch with me at all," he said.

"The last time they spoke to me was in September. My offer to use my land still stands. The land is there but Yorkshire Water is so evasive and arrogant. They think they can trample over anybody."

Mr Mozejko said he would physically stop Yorkshire Water coming on his land.

He said: "I will do anything in my power to stop them because of the way they have behaved. I have thought of a million ways."

He said he was unaware of any deadline and sympathised with Mr Smith because he had been offered a "ludicrous" amount in compensation. "At first they offered not a single penny," he said.
