new head of Haworth Primary School has revealed some of her hopes for the future as her children settle into their new site. Information technology, sport, music and extra-curricular activities are among Pauline O'Keeffe's first priorities as well as English and maths.

She promoted four teachers as soon as she took over last week, giving them extra responsibilities, and she aims to unlock the potential of the rest of her staff. The day before school started Pauline presented her "vision" for the school to about 70 governors, teachers and other members of staff. "I had a really warm welcome from the staff," she says.

Pauline says she will strive for high standards in English and maths, and is particularly proud of the school's new computer suite.

She plans to develop an after-school club and extra activities run by both teachers and outside specialists.

Music will be a speciality with a new choir and recorder ensemble, teaching of instruments, visiting musicians and performances in the community.

Pauline has appointed a new PE co-ordinator and aims to expand the number of sporting activities on offer at the school. "We want the school to be vibrant, full of life when you walk in," adds 38-year-old Pauline.

The former Haworth gift shop worker grew up in Oakworth and attended Holy Family School as a child.

She taught first in local schools including Worth Valley Middle and St Anne's Primary, then spent a year in the USA and the last decade teaching in London.

Pauline has joined a school whose 373 pupils are split between two sites, the original Butt Lane home of Haworth First School and the former Hartington Middle School building on Rawdon Road.

Bradford council is currently carrying out work in the Rawdon Road building to ensure all the children can be taught there from September.

Pauline says that although work will be complete long before the end of the summer term, she does not want to unsettle the remaining young children by moving them early.

She explains: "I think it's best for them to visit their new rooms over the next few months but finish their year on the present site.

"I have a rota where I go to both sites. I think it's important for all the children to see me. I do assemblies in both sites and go into lessons."
