Pensioner Norah Curry is sleeping even sounder in her bed - thanks to British Gas.

This week engineers installed a sophisticated carbon monoxide detector in her home - replacing the cardboard ones she had already set up.

Today, in a special campaign offer, British Gas is giving ten more readers the chance to win a similar detector - installed by a qualified engineer

Says British Gas: "This is a most important safety issue. We were delighted to help Norah, and that the Keighley News is highlighting the message.

"As a measure of our support we decided to make this offer to the newspaper's readers."

Norah, who wrote to the Keighley News to ask us to highlight the hidden dangers of gas appliances, says: "I didn't expect this reaction. It is wonderful. I urge people to follow the advice.

At first Norah thought the last two months of tiredness, stomach pains, diahorrea and dizziness could be put down to old age -- she is 84.

But some detective work uncovered the truth.

She explained: "I realised from quite early on that I felt better outside in the fresh air so thought it must be something in the house."

She managed to narrow it down to upstairs, as she felt at her most nauseous when she was in bed at night.

This compelled Norah, a former employee of the Health and Safety Executive, to get her gas heaters tested.

The upstairs heater, just six feet away from where she sleeps, was found to be emitting unacceptable levels of carbon monoxide.

Norah had been equipped with cardboard carbon monoxide detectors.

A yellow dot on the device turns black if emissions are dangerous.

British Gas agreed that all homes should be fitted with detectors, but prefers more advanced devices to the cardboard ones.

They pointed out that if Norah was asleep upstairs, the cardboard changing colour was not going to be any use to her.

So they offered to fit a plastic battery powered detector which emits an alarm and flashing lights when carbon monoxide levels are dangerously high.

l The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can be similar to flu.

If a member of your family displays them, seek medical advice.
