Cross Hills' long-awaited railway station is a step closer.

Phase one of a feasibility study into the project is now complete. A report, commissioned by North Yorkshire council, has identified two possible locations for the proposed station.

Each option would cost about £2.5 million.

Railtrack favours proposals for the two platforms to be staggered either side of the Kildwick level crossing, in Skipton Road. Delays at the crossing would be minimised, but there could be difficulties with pedestrian access from the car parking area.

The second option is for the platforms to be located to the west of the Station Road bridge. Each scheme would include a 30-space car park.

Richard Owens, the county council's passenger transport manager, says: "A critical factor in deciding between the two options will be the effect they will have on delays at Kildwick level crossing.

"Existing delays are a major concern to the local community, and a meeting with Railtrack and representatives of local parish councils emphasised this point."

Council members will now meet Railtrack and its consultants to discuss the options, and the proposals will also be considered by the council's Craven area committee on March 1.

Mr Owens adds: "These proposals are at a very early stage, and a key factor is the funding. The project will need the support of the train operator, Railtrack and the Strategic Rail Authority if it is to go ahead."
