MARTIN WOOD is due to take on Featherstone hot-shot Jamie Rooney in the race to be top points scorer in the Northern Ford Premiership.

Already the Keighley boys are dominating the 'leading scorer' tables with Jason Lee top of the Try scoring list and Wood heading the goals scoring table on 34, but Rooney has edged to the top of the points table - by one point - after scoring five tries to add to his 27 goals.

But Woody is breathing down his neck just one point behind and a good win on Sunday will almost certainly put him on top of the points scoring ladder.

Jason Lee is also in the points scoring top 10 at number 5 with 48 points and Danny Seal is No10 with a total of 28 points.

Seal, Darren Carter and Craig Horne are also in the top try scoring list.

Martin Wood has also scored in 27 consecutive matches stretching back to March 5 last year.

Cougars also have the longest run of league wins, not including the play-offs. The last league defeat was 27-30 at home to Doncaster Dragons on June 4.

But despite the records coach Steve Deakin has warned his players they will have to be on top form against Featherstone on Sunday.

"They will be full of confidence after their 36-4 victory over Doncaster and 37-6 win at Batley. Those scores show they are very, very tight in defence and very, very effective in attack.

"We will be targeting their danger men, Chapman , Stokes and Rooney, but we will also be mindful that they have quality players in other areas."

Deakin withdrew Mick Slicker from the action at Sheffield with a slight leg injury and he has been given until today (Friday) to prove his fitness.

"That opens up two places on the squad following Thursday's A team game against Featherstone."

The coach also predicted it would be one of the best games of the season with both teams playing attacking rugby.

"Anybody this side of the Pennines who loves rugby league should get down to watch this game, it promises to be a crackerjack of a game."

The club is also taking action following complaints by fans about the length of queues at turnstiles.

Chief executive Nick Crossland said: "There have been tremendous queuing problems and I have spoken to the security company running the gates. I have managed to get another adult gate and another season ticket holders turnstile open near the main gate on Royd Ings."

However the club has yet to take action at the top end of the ground. "We are looking at the possibility of re-opening the Cricket Field turnstyles, but I think they may need some work before they can be used.," he said.

Pre-match entertainment is due to be provided by a DJ from Fresh FM Radio.

The club has also signed 21-year-old 2nd row/prop forward Dave Best. The Oldham-based player was formerly with Rochdale Hornets and is a former Barla International touring France and Australia in 1997.

He is former Lancashire Schoolboys representative and is now 6ft 2ins tall.

"He has played a couple of games with the Alliance side and we expect big thins from in," said Gary Murgatroy.
