Plans for a children's cycle track in Brighouse have been approved by Calderdale councillors.

An application from the Field Lane Action Group to change the use of a former garage site to a track in Malham Road was made to the Council's planning committee.

The cycle track is part of the scheme to raise road-safety awareness in the area and a letter of support was received from Brighouse Road Safety Committee which said that a scheme which kept children away from the dangers of roads should be supported.

The officers' report on the scheme said: "Although in the objections to the proposal, reference is made to the availability of other nearby play areas, this particular use provides facilities that are not available in an organised form elsewhere in the local community."

A petition against the application, signed by seven people, raised concerns about the level of noise generated by the track, the proximity of an electricity sub station, possible damage to properties and the fact that there were two under-used play areas near the site.

Conditions attached to the approval were that a two-metre acoustic screen wall was erected to keep noise levels down and a safety barrier installed at the access point.
