West Bowling's second string caused a major upset when they beat Queensbury 18-10 in the first round of the RBR Bradford Cup at Emsley's Rec.

Bowling pulled off a masterstroke by fielding their play-making prop Mick Gorman for the first time this season. He proved inspirational for the Division Two leaders to topple their Premier opponents.

Queensbury opened up in great style and for the first 20 minutes it looked as if they were going to walk away with the tie.

They posted two tries from centre Trevor Stead and wingman Jason Pell, stand off Johnny Feather goaling one. Bowling replied with a try from Andy Mears converted by Jason Woolham to close the half 10-6.

The pattern of play on the restart was plainly evident when Bowling continually drove Bury on to the back foot with high kicks into the corners. Centre Mark Dunning crossed and full back Mark Cooper scored the best try of the day in a thrilling length-of-the-field effort.

Stand off Woolham made no mistake with the conversions to see Bowling home and set up a potential cracker against Victoria Rangers in the semi-final.

Victoria Rangers, meanwhile, ran in a very impressive 49-16 win at home to Blackpool Stanley in the first round of the League Express National Cup.

Vics, led by captain Phil Greenwood, were rewarded for some well-worked tries when they led 27-0 at the interval. Centre Ikram Butt showed all his class on his return from injury by setting up two tries and scoring one himself.

The man of the match award went to fellow centre Mick Foulding who crossed for four touchdowns with scrum half Jason Jubb, loose forward Mick Sigston, wingman Simon Kenefick and Mickey Glenn posting others. Jubb kicked six goals and a drop goal.

Clayton made a tremendous comeback to beat Pennine League Premier Division leaders Underbank Rangers 22-19 at Lidget Green.

Danny Murgatroyd scored the Villagers first half try but they trailed 10-6 at half-time. Clayton looked to be on the road to defeat when Murgatroyd was carried off with a broken leg having fallen behind 19-10 with just ten minutes to go.

A try from prop Craig Pickthall was soon followed by a cracking effort from forward Mark Schofield to close the gap to 19-18. Schofield kept his cool with two late penalties - which gave him a total of five successful kicks - to win the match.

Birkenshaw go joint top of the Premier Division following their 42-12 success at home to Guiseley Rangers. Birky did not have matters all their own way and turned round 12-6 down with only a try from Carl Wilcock, converted by Jason Brooksbank, to show for their first half endeavours.

The second half was a different kettle of fish, however, as Birky went to town with tries from Morton Robinson (2), Darren Webb, Glenn Tillotson, Andy Redmond. Richard Cousins and Brooksbank. Jarrod Toulson kicked four conversions.

Keighley Town had a tough task going to last week's Yorkshire Cup winners Lindley Swifts with only 14 men in Division One.

The task was too tough for them and they lost 58-22 but credit where credit is due they gave their best.

Full back Gary Marples scored two tries, the first a sensational effort from 80 metres. Darren McNulty and Adey Clough also crossed. Darren Lynham landed two goals and Mick Marshall also bagged one.

In an impressive forward performance Naheem Anwar and Jimmy Shaw impressed. In a quirk of the fixture list Town now face the losing Yorkshire Cup finalists Hunslet Warriors on Saturday.

Queensbury A won 24-12 at home to Boothtown Terriers in a match that was played well above Division Three standards.

Bury recovered from conceding an early try to change ends 12-6 up following touchdowns from centre Danny Wilcock and scrum half Gareth McKinley, both improved by loose forward Shaun Fallon.

McKinley was soon over for his second on the re-start and Fallon used his experience to cross for the last, adding all the extras to give him a 12 point tally.

Shipley could only muster a try from Mick McCarthy when they crashed to a 44-4 defeat at Division Five Newsome Panthers.

Keighley Albion's second team played Skolar's second team in a friendly and ran out 24-22 winners. Steve Holmes was star of the show and he scored two tries and Dave Sanderson also crossed. Danny Brophy was again an impressive man of the match and looks a fine prospect for the future.
