BROWNIE leader Sheila Davison is stepping down after nearly 50 years of "being prepared".

Sheila, of Brookacre, joined Ingleton Guides in 1948 and began helping the Brownies as a pack leader in 1952.

Five years later she gained her warrant as Guider, and has been leading Ingleton Brownies ever since.

"I got a lot out of guiding and my guide captain did a lot for me, so I have tried to give something back to the girls," she told the Herald this week.

To mark her retirement, Sheila was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the North Yorkshire West Guide Association.

And she received flowers and a Wedgwood dish from Division Commissioner, Sue Luchetti.

Sheila, who was District Commissioner for Brownies between 1979 and 1990, said: "I have got to retire now as I will be 65 next week. It's a guide ruling.

"We have 13 Brownies now which is less than we used to but there are so many other activities for them to take part in."

Originally, the Brownies met at the Guide Hut in Back Gate but when Ingleborough Community Centre opened in 1974 the pack moved there.

Sheila told the Herald there had been many changes during the 50 years, not least the uniforms.

She said: "They have changed a lot. When I was young we used to wear dresses, but now these have changed to culottes, sweatshirts and t-shirts. It is much more relaxed, but it's had to change with the times like every organisation."

Being brownie leader, Sheila has always played an important part in community life in Ingleton.

Several years ago she and her husband James were presented with the Golden Heart Award in appreciation for their dedicated service to the village.

Mr Davison, who is now retired, is well-known for keeping the village tidy by sweeping and picking up litter. He also tidies the community centre garden.

Margaret Milburn will now take over leadership of the Brownie pack.
