Burley 3, Baildon 82 - Baildon certainly made up for their disappointing home defeat against Hessle.

They scored 55 unanswered points in the second half down the hill against Yorkshire Division Four's bottom club in this re-arranged league match.

And coach Kenny Pollard was, not surprisingly, much happier with their performance - even though it was against a side who had only managed a draw and conceded 441 points in 14 previous league matches this season.

"What was so pleasing was that we converted such a large proportion of our chances," he said, "and the backs gave one of their best performances of the season in showing such good finishing ability.

"Mind you, they weren't running as straight as I would like, but we did have a bit of invention, and the performance was a million miles better than against Hessle the previous week."

Baildon coped seamlessly with the late arrival of centre Chris Smithies. He ended up missing the first 19 minutes of the contest.

Having got on the field, he played at flanker, Danny Helstrip moving back to prop, Dave Ruff coming off and Jim Hutton - normally a flanker - staying in the backs.

Seventh-placed Baildon fancied this contest from the off, and got into slight trouble on a couple of occasions early on by trying too much.

But once they had the first points on the board through a nice link between the backs, full back Gareth Guyers giving the scoring pass to left winger Matt Oddy.

Forward passes ended two other promising moves, but fly half Dave Wilde kept the scoreboard moving by adding a superb conversion to the try and a penalty.

Right winger Nick Oddy - brother of Matt - was the next to cross after a mixture of elusive footwork and shoddy tackling, and Wilde again added an excellent conversion and a well-struck penalty to make it 20-0.

Burley were struggling to make it into Baildon's 22, but fly half Andrew Jones did cut the deficit by three points with a penalty in the 34th minute.

It was only a brief respite, however, as Baildon hooker Simon Fitt got his first try for two years for the first team, Wilde converting to make the half-time score 27-3.

With plucky full back Guy Redfearn often facing a stream of Baildon attacks, the second half became a procession as the visitors added nine more tries.

Matt Oddy got his second, and Smithies his first after a powerful break and well-timed pass by No 8 Phil Wilson.

Nick Oddy completed his hat-trick, his second try coming after a fine take of an astute kick through by centre Dave Hemming.

Hemming - lethal at this level when he is in the mood - then scored himself, and Helstrip went over with such force in the right corner that a Burley defender needed treatment. Lock Richard Crooks, Hemming and Guyers completed the rout, the in-form Wilde bringing his own tally to 22 points after two penalties and eight conversions.
