Dougie Lampkin blitzed Barcelona on his way to a fifth world indoor arena championship trial success.

He beat all the Spanish hopes with another spellbinding performance that puts him on exactly 100 points with five rounds yet to run.

Lampkin swept through the qualifiers for just a one point penalty. When he cleared the awesome waterfall section without fault in the Palace Sant Jordi, 10,000 Spaniards leapt as one to their feet followed by the loudest cheer of the night and a mighty blast of compressed air horns.

There had been question marks over whether any of the home riders could beat the Yorkshireman, but Dougie showed them that he was not going down to Marc Colomer or Albert Cabestany and proceeded to destroy all hopes in the finale, over a longer than usual indoor course, a ploy designed to trip up the Sildsen champion.

The normally dour Colomer got his head round the Lampkin dominance through the first five sections in the final but fell apart on the waste skip hazard where Dougie went clear and despite failing two sections, and taking a time penalty on the very tricky log section, took the top place and another 20 championship points.

"I like winning, but to win in Barcelona is both important and special to me and for Montesa," was Lampkin's brief comments after the win.

Result - Final: 1 Dougie Lampkin (Montesa) 12; 2 Marc Colomer (Gas Gas) 16; 3 Albert Cabestany (Beta) 35.

Non-qualifiers: 1 Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa) 22; 2 Marc Freixa (Sherco) 24; 3 Steve Colley (Gas Gas) 24.

World points: 1 Lampkin 100; 2 Cabestany 73; 3 Freixa 72; 4 Colomer 70; 5 Fujinami 58; 6 Colley 57.

Martin Crosswaite missed the national Hardaker Trial two weeks ago by the narrowest possible margin but the Bingley rider heads for Rosedale on Sunday morning with his sights firmly set on the Colonial Trial premier.

But the major obstacle will again be Sam Connor who beat him by just one penalty in the Hardaker. Sam Ludgate, Henry Moorhouse, Dan Thorpe, Dan Clark and Ian Austermuhle will also make it tough for Martin if he is to take his first Colonial victory.

At least two major adversaries missed the cut - Ben Hemingway, winner last year, and brother Dan have missed the 130- strong entry limit, and are far from happy about the fact that not even one of the family - both have won the trial - will get the chance to defend family honours.

Dougie Lampkin heads for the sixth round of the Fortuna World Indoor championship on Saturday night at the Pavillion Atlantico in the centre of Lisbon, Portugal.

This event marks the mid-point in the series.

On the home front Bradford stage one of their popular Autowbars championship trials which is aimed at newcomers and learners in trials.

Horsforth are at Tong for the opening novice and beginners contest, the Hemingway brothers head for Greenmoor and a round of the Yorkshire Centre ACU trials championship where they will probably meet Graham Jarvis and factory MRS Bultaco.
