Manager Jim Jefferies is arranging to give a trial to a Slovenian international striker this week as Bradford City try to cure their chronic goalscoring problems.

Jefferies is having a look at Ermin Filjak, who currently plays in Switzerland and is out of contract at the end of the season.

He said: "He is a goalscorer who played all of Slovenia's games in the European Championships.

"His contract expires at the end of this season and his club are keen to sign him again, but he can exercise his rights under the Bosman Ruling."

City are the lowest scorers in the Premiership with only 16 goals from 25 matches.

Jefferies said: "Football is a tight game and it isn't easy to make chances, but there are more teams than us who are facing this problem. What we have got to do is to take our chances when they come along.

"In recent matches we have had good chances at Sunderland and Arsenal and then against Aston Villa on Saturday Dean Windass had a terrific chance.

"There was a great ball in but he sent his header wide.

"Then we shot ourselves in the foot by presenting Villa with two opportunities and they punished us to go 2-0 up although Darius Vassell showed great finishing to score his two goals.

"That gave them confidence just as it would have done with us because goals change games.

"I think had we scored first we would have won it."

Although City are ten points adrift of Premiership safety, Jefferies insisted: "We are not out of it yet. We will never give up.

"It's a bit frustrating, but I can see light at the end of the tunnel. I think things are moving in the right direction. There is a lot of improving to be done, but it will be done bit by bit."

City are due to meet Liverpool in an FA Premier Reserve match at Valley Parade tonight (7pm) but snow and rain over the last couple of days have put the game in doubt and the club have arranged for a local referee to inspect the pitch.

If the match does go ahead, Jefferies plans to give defender David Wetherall his first competitive match since his major groin operation at the end of November.

Record signing David Hopkin, who was in Premiership action against Aston Villa after four months on the sidelines with ankle ligament trouble, is also in the team.

There was also a chance that Benito Carbone would play tonight, but the Italian striker is still not 100 per cent fit following a groin injury.

Jefferies said: "I thought about giving him a run-out in the reserves, but he hurt his groin in training on Friday and it was sore over the weekend.

"He trained in the gym yesterday, but he is not really fit enough to take part in the game.

"We will see how he goes in training this week."
