Stronger measures to prevent employees using industrial tribunals as a way of causing embarrassment have been welcomed by engineering employers in Yorkshire.
Under new proposals, due to take effect within the next few months, a tribunal will be able to award costs of up to £10,000 for 'unreasonable or vexatious' behaviour. The current maximum is £500.
In another move, aimed at discouraging applications which have no chance of succeeding at a full tribunal hearing, an applicant can now be ordered to pay a deposit of up to £500, instead of the £150 which previously applied.
Ian Hughes, director of EEF Yorkshire and Humberside, said he was sorry such higher penalties had to be brought in but said money was usually the only penalty that could be used.
