Economic prosperity for the Bradford district will be the top priority of the metro council, with making the area a better place to live in a close second. These are the most important aims according to a new policy plan going to the council's management committee next week.

West Riding churches and chapels are suffering seriously from the coke shortage. In most cases stocks are low and replacements uncertain, one Bradford vicar saying that they were "living from hand to mouth". Coke merchants have been instructed that they have to work to a priority scheme with places of worship well down the list, and many churches are finding that as their stocks run out they cannot get replacements. Some ministers wonder if it will become necessary to have joint services.
