PUBLIC- spirited people are being sought to visit and support homeless individuals and families in the Bradford district.

The aim is to recruit volunteers to help homeless people to settle into accommodation and break the cycle of homelessness. The council say it is an interesting opportunity for anyone who is considering a career working with people and can give one day a week between 10am and 2.30pm

The council's volunteers unit is also looking for people to help sort food and clothing for the homeless.

Anne Morley, volunteers manager, said: "Many homeless people need regular support on a one to one basis. This can vary depending on their needs and what the volunteer has to offer.

"It may just mean a couple of visits or a slightly longer commitment if people need help settling into their new home community. A homeless family may need accompanying to an appointment at a hospital or clinic and anyone in this situation is likely to need

emotional support or even just help to find out about the area in which they are re-housed.

"No qualifications are necessary except an ability to get on with people.

"We will provide training in such useful subjects as basic listening skills, equal rights, homeless legislation and the role of the volunteer.

"The volunteering unit staff are also here to provide support and supervision and

volunteers will receive out-of-pocket-expenses"
