POLLUTION experts are to take a fresh look at Otley - after doubts were expressed over recent all clear results.

Monitoring of air quality will take place over the next few months from a site right in the town centre - rather than on the outskirts, as carried out before.

The fresh look comes after one of the town's GPs and an environmentalist both fled Otley because of what they described as rising pollution levels.

Councillor Phil Coyne, chairman of the Otley and Wharfedale Community Involvement Team (CIT) welcomed another look at air quality in the town.

"We are all delighted that the recent city wide survey gave Otley the all clear.

"However, many people are still concerned about pollution levels in parts of the town with high traffic levels. The new station in Manor Square will be ideally placed to give us the definitive information we all seek."

Otley was recently given a clean bill of health in a district wide review of air quality.

But the monitor station was based at Prince Henry's Grammar School in Farnley Lane - which some people pointed out was too far away from traffic fumes.

The monitoring station in Manor Square, will measure levels of the pollutants nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particulate matter (PM10).

l Dr Geoffrey Hall , a GP at Bridge Street Surgery, moved abroad last year. He said one of the reasons was that his health had suffered because of the queues of waiting traffic outside his surgery.

And Geoffrey Jones, a member of Wharfedale Environmental Trust, moved to North Yorkshire because he said the quality of air in the town was so poor.

Health is on

the agenda

HEALTH matters will be discussed today by members of the Leeds North West Primary Care Group.

Members of the public will also be given the chance to put questions to the board made up of health professionals and lay people. Topics due for discussion are the possible setting up of a health website and progress on turning the PCG into a trust.

The meeting at Yeadon Town Hall is due to start at 9.30am.
