AN appeal to raise £5,000 to refurbish well-used sports facilities has made a promising start - despite a disappointing response from the business community.

Otley Town Football Club is hoping to finish a major refurbishment programme which started last year with the installing of new roof and gutting of the inside of the clubhouse. Plans include segregated changing rooms and new clubhouse facilities.

But the club has hit a cash flow problem and has launched its 'Wall Appeal', which aims to sell 1,000 bricks at £5 each. Anyone buying a brick will have their name entered on a representative brick wall at the club.

Club chairman Richard Askham said: "We have made a promising start but what has been disappointing is the lack of any reaction from the business community. We will be looking to the parents of our juniors, and are urging our seniors to sell the appeal but we also need the support of the community as a whole. This is a valuable resource and we are desperately trying to ensure that the facilities are suitable for their use and the 21st century," he added.

"The club, pitches and the facilities will something that people can be proud of - but only with the town's help. Whether it's one brick or many, your help will be much appreciated."

Mr Askham added that the appeal being launched just before Christmas and a similar appeal by arson-hit Weston Lane Sports and Social Club had all affected the total so far.

Otley man Mark Currie, who has written a book on local football priced £10 has promised £3.50 to the development fund for every copy sold and has also promised to buy ten bricks.

Ady Atters, of The Cove restaurant, has promised to buy 20 bricks and Vernon Marsden at the Bay Horse has promised ten. Jim Hemingway has sold 18, Dr John Metcalfe has bought five, Derek Hawley two, Denis Blackburn 12, Graham McGee and Terry Nicholson four each. Mr Askham himself has bought 20.
