DOUGIE Lampkin blitzed Barcelona on Sunday night to his fifth world indoor arena championship trial success beating all the Spanish hopes with another spellbinding performance that puts him on exactly 100 points with five rounds yet to run. Lampkin swept through the qualifiers for just a one point penalty.

When he cleared the awesome waterfall section without fault in the Palace Sant Jordi, 10,000 Spaniards leapt as one to their feet followed by the loudest cheer of the night and a mighty blast of compressed air horns.

The Fortuna publicity machine Esedos questioned in their pre-event release on Friday whether any of the home riders could beat the Yorkshireman.

Well Dougie showed them that he was not going down to Marc Colomer or Albert Cabestany and proceeded to destroy all hopes in the finale, over a longer than usual indoor course, another ploy that the promoters included to try and trip up the Sildsen champion.

The normally dour Colomer got his head round the Lampkin dominance through the first five sections in the final but fell apart on the waste skip hazard where Dougie went clear and, despite failing two sections and taking a time penalty on the very tricky log section, he took the top place and another 20 championship points.

"I like winning, but to win Barcelona is both important and special to me and for Montesa," was Lampkin's brief comments after the win.

The weather took charge of the weekend bikesport list with some events taking place and others snowbound or just impossible to reach.

Yeadon & Guiseley Motor Club did manage to stage their Yorkshire Centre ACU championship trial at Keighley Gate but Graham Jarvis and Ian Austermuhle never made the venue high above Riddlesden,

Jarvis managed half a mile from his Summerbridge home but his Mercedes transporter was wayward in the first hundred yards and with a mind of its own so, after almost sliding into a ditch, Graham abandoned the vehicle and walked home.

Ian Austermuhle did want to compete in the same event on his GP Beta.

The 20-year-old student, based at the University of North Lancashire Preston campus, had caught a train to Malton, driven to his Rosedale home, driven to the top of Sutton Bank above Thirsk and then decided what he saw below the huge hill was forbidding and turned back for home and Malton and his Student Railcard.

Pickering also dumped their trial at Newton on Rawcliffe because of snow and the 20 that got to Harwood Dale and the Scarborough Club's youth trial competed on a conducted basis.

"The snow was blowing straight across the Dale, the visibility was less than fifty yards so all the youngsters were kept together at all times," said organiser Anne Lockwood.

The final casualty was the Northallerton trial at Osmotherly where conditions were too severe for the trial.

MARTIN Crosswaite missed the national Hardaker Trial two weeks ago by the narrowest possible margin.

The Bingley rider now heads for Rosedale on Sunday morning with his sights firmly set on the Colonial Trial premier where he will have to face the problem of Sam Connor, who beat him by just one penalty in the Hardaker.

Add in Sam Ludgate, Henry Moorhouse, Dan Thorpe, Dan Clark and Ian Austermuhle and Martin has another mountain to climb to take his first Colonial victory.

At least two major adversaries miss the cut.

Ben Hemingway, winner last year, and his brother Dan have missed the 130-strong entry limit, and they are far from happy about the fact that at least one of them won't get a chance to defend family honours.

On the Lampkin front, Dougie heads for the sixth round of the Fortuna World Indoor championship on Saturday night at the Pavillion Atlantico in the centre of Lisbon, Portugal, an event that marks the mid-point in the series.

On the home front Bradford stage one of their popular Autowbars championship trials, aimed straight at the newcomers and learners in trials.

Horsforth are at Tong for the opening novice and beginners contest, while the Hemingway brothers head for Greenmoor and a round of the Yorkshire Centre ACU trials championship, where they will probably meet Graham Jarvis and his factory MRS Bultaco or, to give the bike its new official name, the Sherco .

Ben Hemingway won Sunday's Yeadon & Guiseley Motor Club Yorkshire championship qualifying trial at snowbound Keighley Gate where a massive 130-strong entry covered a woodland course and seventeen observed sections.

With snow falling and sleet turning the sections in a lottery many riders managed only one lap.

Others ploughed round and covered the original two lap format but after lengthy discussions on Monday Sue Smith, and the Yeadon & Guiseley officials, decided to take the results from one lap and that gave the younger of the Hemingway brothers the top award by six marks from James Lampkin and Nathan Wrigglesworth.

On the same hard course Trawden's Daniel Smith was the winner of the youth class from Guiseley's Edward McIntosh. Darley garage owner Ian Myers won the clubman class from Connonley's Graham Abbey while Matthew Paskin and Zac Sherwin took the youth classes on the easy course. Jack Challoner was the star in the youngest age group from Adam Elliott.
