The daughter of Bradford man killed in a crash in Austria has told how he was a relaxed biker, "loved by everyone".

Speaking about the tragedy for the first time since it happened last June, Sarah Burgess, 18, said her father Michael Burgess did not want to die in England.

Sarah was at Huddersfield Magistrates Court yesterday with her mother Lorna Burgess, 43, who was divorced from Mr Burgess.

Deputy Assistant Coroner James Turnbull recorded a verdict of death by misadventure, but added that Mr Burgess, former chairman of Bradford and District Motorcycling Club, had done nothing wrong.

Sarah, of Worthing Street, Wyke, said: "Dad always said that he never wanted to die in England.

"He wanted to die on a long road that went on forever. I suppose he got his wish.

"He was such a relaxed person, so cool, and he was loved by everyone."

The court was told how Mr Burgess was riding his black Honda VFR along the Wargrain to Flacheu road in Austria on June 2 last year when a German tourist, travelling in the opposite direction, turned his Audi A4 estate car in front of the biker.

Despite braking sharply, Mr Burgess's bike slid onto its side throwing the 47-year-old and his girlfriend Jane Hills, who was riding pillion, against the Audi.

In a statement read to the court, eyewitness Christian Maurer said he was driving behind the Audi which was indicating to turn left when he noticed Mr Burgess driving in the opposite direction.

He said: "The motorcyclist could not stop. I was under the impression the car driver in front of me had not seen him."

The Audi's driver Klaus Okunek, 38, and his wife left their two young children sitting in the Audi and tended to Miss Hall and Mr Burgess. But Mr Burgess later died from his injuries.
